Our Superstar Students
Hello Wonderful Parents,
While planning this weekend I came across an amazing science website which has many simple science experiments that I thought the students would like:
http://www.tryscience.org/home.html
On this website they also have a few cool games, that are designed for older students. I played some of them and found they introduced some very complex concepts presented in an entertaining format. See if they like this: http://www.powerupthegame.org
If you try this, let me know what you think?

Dear Parents,
I know this time of year the students must feel like we are all headed to Florida together in a Mini Cooper and we are all wondering when in the work we will ever get there…and another indoor recess…ugh! I know this time of year seems the longest, but we will get there. I am enjoying both my classes this year. Through some of the activities we have been doing lately I have enjoyed getting to know some of the students a little better. What great personalities!

http://mslamaster.weebly.comHello Rockstar Parents,
Due to the inclement weather we have rescheduled the Valentine's Day party to this Wednesday. The Susan B. Anthony test will also be Wednesday. Please view this website to help your child prepare for the test, read her biography, complete fun activities, and learn interesting facts about Susan B. Anthony: http://gardenofpraise.com/ibdsbant.htm I could tell many of the students used this resource when we studied Frederick Douglas because they came prepared and excited to share what they had learned with the class.
Also, to help math students keep learning over break and our "snomageddon" you can visit: http://learnzillion.com/lessons/2746-solve-multiplicative-comparison-word-problems-by-using-a-multiplication-sentence. You will need to register, but it is a very valuable resource that follows the common core standards. This is by grade level so the accelerated students can view lessons at their level, or it can be used for any concept that students might be struggling with or need a quick refresher before CRCT. The link I gave you is for multiplication word problems, but you will see that there are many, many other videos that are very helpful, with visuals. Let me know if this is helpful for your child. I appreciate the feedback.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Laura
Dear Parents,
Just a quick note: Math tests are graded and test scores can be viewed
online. If your child does not have a grade that is because they still need to
finish the test. Some students forgot sections and several students didn't
complete the test. Worksheets were sent home for a couple of days just in case
we have inclement weather.
Also, Susan B. Anthony study guides were sent home today and students can
read more about her online: http://gardenofpraise.com/ibdsbant.htm
A great way to explain the women's sufferage movement is to watch part or all
of Mary Poppins. We watched a 2 minute clip today, but the children loved it
and would love to watch more.
Have a great evening,
Laura
This is my first experience with bad winter weather in the south....all I can say is WOW! I'm sure everyone has stories to tell, but I felt bad that I saw many buses on my way home Tuesday night around 10:00. Thankfully we are all safe and sound now and the sun is out. I wanted to keep you up-to-date with how we are going to handle the upcoming tests. This is the plan:
Social Studies: Frederick Douglass test on Monday if we have school on Friday. If we have a 2-hour delay or school is canceled, then we will move the test to Tuesday. To help them prepare for the test, students can go on this website to review: http://gardenofpraise.com/ibdfdoug.htm
(if problems Google Frederick Douglass Garden of Praise) This is a great website with a kid friendly biography along with a slideshow and online games.
Math: The math test will be Friday, February 7. I realize that if we don't have school on Friday that the students won't have a study guide, but I have already decided since we don't have as much time with this unit that we will review the Unit Pre Assessment ASAP (this Friday or Monday) and send this home for the students to study. This is a good review and will be a great way to prepare for the test.
Hopefully this will cover things if we have a delay, cancellation, or school on Friday.
I don't want to move things back too much because then we get into problems with covering all the 3rd grade material needed for CRCT.
Hopefully you are home enjoying the day with your family, if not stay warm and safe!
Laura
Dear Parents,
At the end of last semester, some students were able to "buy" the opportunity
with Lamaster Bucks to bring in their own electronic device. The students loved
this and it gave me a chance to pilot this program to see if the students could
handle this responsibily. lI also wanted to make sure this could be used as a
learning tool and not a play toy in class. I have to say that I have been
pleasantly surprised. I saw that students were motivated and engaged in their
own learning process. This is something I am going to use with my math
stations, but my goal is to eventually use these in all subject areas to enrigh
and dive deeper into the content areas that I teach. The advantage for the
accelerated students is that when they are not able to go to their math teacher
because of testing, etc., they can still be working on 4th/5th grade level work
through assignments on their teacher website or other choice items assigned by
their teacher.
Please know thiat this is optional. I still have computers in the classroom
so your child does not HAVE to bring in a device, especially if you feel
uncomfortable with having your child bring in their own technology device.
I will be sending home electronic permission forms tomorrow.
Please let me know any questions or concerns that you might have.
Thank you so much,
Laura Lamaster
Hello
Wonderful Parents!
It
will be a quick 4 day week. So much to do in so little time--yikes!! ...but we
will get it done :)
Just
a reminder that our fossil test is Wednesday. The study guides are uploaded on
this website.
For
the Silent Aution for Snowflakes & Hotcakes the 3rd grade will be auctioning
pizza and a movie. There will be one student from each classroom that can bid
on this fun after school activity. They will get to eat pizza in the room with
other 3rd grade auction winners and watch a movie. The tentative date we have
selected is March 11th. We are looking forward to this
event!
Homework:
Math:
Students are starting a Tic Tac Toe Place Value activity. These were sent home
Friday. They will have time this Friday to work on this, although they will
have a little time each day in the AM to work on these activities. They will
need to bring their supplies to work on their project, especially on Friday. I
told students that some of these activities like the video and powerpoint will
probably be easier to be completed at home and email me this information before
their presentation. Please look through this activity and help your child
decide which projects they would like to do. For the cartoon strip there are
several fun programs online that you can use. Powtoons.com is great to use for a
power point presentation, or can also be used for the cartoon strip as well. I
think they will enjoy doing this:) They will need to pace themselves so they
aren't having to complete this the weekend before it is
due.

Hello Wonderful Parents,
We are off and running in the 2nd semester.
I have been trying to come up with a way for parents to review math tests and for me to also be able to put these tests in student folders at the end of the year. When I sent these home in the past this has been a problem...so I thought the math binders would be a good idea. Students will put their tests in their binder so they can begin to chart their achievement on standards and visually see and chart their improvement on pre and post tests. These will also be used for math reference material, math journaling, projects, problem solving, etc. Thank you so much for so generously donating $ for binders. I ordered the binders and they should be here soon so we can begin to use these.

Dear Parents,
New Prospect Elementary is once again participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Third Grade will conduct individual classroom spelling bees on January 10th. The grade level spelling bee will be on January 13th at 9:30 am in the cafeteria.
Although only a 4th or 5th grade student can move on to the next level to represent New Prospect Elementary, starting early is great practice for the students.
Several documents are available on schoolcollabo to help you prepare. If you type in Spelling Bee under Document search, these should come up.

Hi Parents!
Of course Thursday is going to be one of the coldest days this week ...so please make sure your child dresses appropriately. Most of the field trip is outside, and we don't want the students to be cold or uncomfortable. Pants, jackets, and tennis shoes should be worn. Students can put their red t-shirts on over whatever shirt they wear to school that day. Let me know if you have any questions, thanks!

Also, I appreciate your help with the Math Measurement Mission bags. The students did an excellent job and really enjoyed them. We will continue to use these as we make line plots and graphs using this information.
Papers went home tonight with the students. Math tests need to be returned after you have finished reviewing these with your child. I didn't have any students that needed to retake these tests, but if you would like your child to retake the test, they have to attend the remediation session next Wednesday morning. Please let me know as soon as possible if your child will be coming to this session.
Hope to see you tonight at Bingo :)

Dear Wonderful Parents,
We are beginning a pollution unit in science. The students are bringing home an easy, short activity tonight where they graph items in their recycling container each night (T, W, Th). They will do this for 3 days and hand this in on Friday. This activity should only take a few minutes each night and will help to generate discussion about pollution and recycling next week.
Finally, I am happy to say that the Democracy assessment is graded and up on the electronic gradebook for you to see. I was so happy with the results--90% class average. Tests will be sent home tomorrow with students.
Book Fair forms are going home today. Contact Julie Amato if you would like to volunteer for the Book Fair.

Week of 10/21/13
I have a lot of information to get through this week. I promise I won't be so wordy in the future. I know we are all busy, but first I wanted to remind you that we have ITBS testing this week. So please make sure your child gets to bed early and has breakfast to help them be successful on the test.
Parents, if you have empty egg cartons you can part with I would love them for a fraction activity I would like to do with with the students--thank you in advance :)
Some of you have asked during parent/teacher conferences resources to help your child. Here are some resources that were shared with me, so I will pass them along to you:

There has been a change in the remediation and retesting procedure, please read below:
Remediation & Retests--
There have been some changes to the remediation and retest information that was communicated to you last week. Please make a note of these changes, and if you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
There will no longer be a weekly “help session” for students on Wednesday mornings. These “help sessions” will only be done after any major tests have been given to provide students wishing to retake a test with remediation. Everyone will have an option to take a retest; however, in order to take the retest the studentMUST attend the remediation session. Students that did not pass the test the first time MUST RETAKE the test and attend the remediation session. These sessions will begin promptly at 7:10, and your child is required to be on-time and present for the entire session in order to be granted a retake. Any students who are tardy or absent from these remediation sessions will NOT be permitted to do a retake. Information about these remediation sessions will be communicated to you by the teachers in charge of the subject in which the tests are given, but please plan on these sessions taking place 2-3 days after any major assessment is given.
Week: 10/7/13
Reminders for this week:
We are going on a field trip to Chattahoochee Nature Center November 14th. Please make sure you get the field trip form back to me before Friday, October 18th.
We have started multiplication timed tests. The students took their 2's and 3's multiplication tests last week. We will continue to work through our multiplication chart. They are working to build an ice cream cone. Guess what they get when they complete their multiplication chart . . . you guessed it--ice cream!!
TAG day has been changed from Thursday to Tuesday for 3rd grade.
Math: We are learning fractions. Please refer to the parent letter in the document section of the SchoolCollabo home page to see what students are learning and ideas to help at home. Also, don't forget my "Math Websites" portion from SchoolCollabo. This is full of different websites that will benefit your child with basic math concepts they might be struggling with.
Social Studies: We are studying democracy, Greece architecture and culture, how Greece was the model for our government, and basic map skills. Our Social Studies test will be October 18th. A study guide will be sent home this Friday. Please remember that we send home these study guides a week ahead to give the parents and children time to study together before the test. We are still learning some of these concepts since we still have a week to instruct these students over this material. If your child is struggling with homework please remind them to take home their social studies book. Learning the levels and branches of government can be overwhelming, so a little extra support at home might be helpful.
Have a wonderful week!
Laura
Week of 9/30/13
What a busy week we had! We had STAR testing in the computer lab, our Georgia Habitats test and our Unit 1 math test. I would like to say I am proud as punch with how well the students did on these tests. We had a 92% class average on the science test. The math test is graded and we will review these in class on Monday with the students. I was so pleased with how well the students did on this test. Pretty amazing considering this was a very confusing, difficult test (and that is all I'm going to say about that :).
I split the test into two days when we took this and we discussed some of the difficult problems from the first part already so they could learn from this test. These will be sent home with their papers this week. Please look these over and return them so I can keep this test in their file.
Math: We are begining fractions and introducing our ice cream multiplication--sweet!! This is a great way for the students to learn their facts in a positive fun way.
Social Studies: If you haven't heard already, we are studying democracy and map skills. Democracy is a difficult abstract concept. The students struggle with understanding the branches of the government at local, state, and national levels. The students can bring home their textbook at anytime to help reinforce concepts taught at school.
Don't forget to send in change of transportation notes and notify the office or me when your child is sick/absent.
Also, if you have something to give your child at school, please have it to the front office by 10:30.
Thanks and have a great week!
Laura
Week of 9/23/13
This is going to be a busy week.
Monday we have our first school assembly about using our brain. What a good way to start our week :)
Tuesday we will have our first science test over Georgia Habitats. We will review Monday by answering the study guide questions and playing Jeopardy.
Wednesday we will start our first math test. This will be broken up into two days. We will take the first part on Wednesday and the 2nd part on Thursday. We will review for this test on Monday and Tuesday. Our student teacher has an excellent lesson planned for Monday over geometry and quadrilaterals.
Thursday & Friday we will begin a democracy unit in social studies. Friday in math we will begin a fraction unit and continue to review our multiplication facts with timed tests. We took our first timed test over 5's and the students did very well.
I am enjoying getting to know everyone during our parent teacher conferences. What a great group of parents we have!
Have a wonderful week,
Laura
Week of 9/15/13
Dear Parents,
It was great to see everyone at curriculum night! I feel fortunate to have such wonderful parents!! It takes us all to make your child successful. Your support, work, and communication is a major piece to help your child learn and grow academically, emotionally, and socially.
I will be implementing the "Be Kind" program that highlights basic lifelong guidelines and lifeskills to help students learn to appreciate, respect, and work well with others. This is a great program and will be followed up in language arts through some writing assignments once a week.
I am excited about our first Panter Pete Lab tomorrow (Monday). We will be learning about animals and will be dissecting owl pellets. You will have to ask your child what they discovered.
In Math we will continue studying Geometry and will begin to work on a challenge problem every day that will help to cover and review some of the questions on the test. They will also take a preassessment to help prepare them for the test. If you haven't noticed already, the Study Guide for the math test is posted on this website (SchoolCollabo), on my homepage. Please remember that some of the items on the Study Guide we haven't gotten to yet. I always post the Study Guide a week ahead of the test so you can begin to prepare your child at home for the test. The test will be on Wednesday, September 25.
In Science, we continue to study Georgia Habitats and will begin to review for the test towards the end of this week. The test will be Tuesday, September 24. I will post this study guide online as well. We have completed all the mini habitat booklets and students will begin to research 2 plants, 2 animals, and 2 trees (one @/3 x 5 index cards) from each of the regions. They need to have this completed by next Monday, September 23. When they have completed this they will assemble their booklet.

http://mslamaster.weebly.comHello Rockstar Parents,
Due to the inclement weather we have rescheduled the Valentine's Day party to this Wednesday.

Just a quick note to thank everyone that brought in cookies--the students have appreciated these and will continue to enjoy them as we use them throughout our economics unit.

Laura Lamaster
Have a great week!
