Hello Amazing Parents! Thank you so much for everything you brought in for our theme days this week. This will be a surprise each day what we will be doing. They will pop a balloon that will tell them what they will be learning about each day. The only exception is Friday because of Field Day. Reminders for Field Day on Friday: 1. Wear yellow (our Air House colors) 2. Check the weather. If your child burns easily, make sure they have sunscreen on and with them. 3. Wear tennis shoes-we will be running. No sandals. 4. Make sure your child has breakfast. We will be eating lunch later on Field Day. 5. No water bottles because we will have drink stations and water events to keep them cool. Don't forget Spring Showcase on Tuesday, May 14th. The students have been working hard on their life cycle projects to play with you. Next week we will be studying writing, reading, science, and English with our themed units. The students love doing these. They are a surprise and very top secret :) It will be a great time to review and learn! Happy Mother's Day!! Laura Dear Amazing Parents,
We have one more week before we begin our STEM and theme activities. This week will have our ice cream party for everyone students passing their addition and subtraction timed fact fluency. We will begin one of our themed units early if students can earn this privilege. We still have a few open slots if you would like to bring in anything: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c084daead2ea3f58-endofyear1 Dont forget to check lost and found when you drop off your child in the morning or at the end of the day. Our lost and found is overflowing! Curriculum: Writing & Reading: Students finished their last major writing assignment with opinion writing. They wrote about their favorite book and character, giving their opinion about each. They have been uploading these in SeeSaw and making posters for a gallery walk the students will have during reading next week. The students read with their Book Buddies on Friday and will share from their book series next week. Grammar & Word Work: We will review everything we have learned so far in grammar. In word work: Phonics skill /ew/ & /eu/: drew, threw, neutral, flew, mildew, grew. We will be reviewing all the red words they have learned this year. Math: We finished our Unit 6 assessment and everyone did a great job. Remember, if you want to see these assessments, please email me and I will send these home for you to review with your child. On Friday we took the iReady math assessment on the computers. We still have a few students that need to finish this assessment. Next week we will go to the computer lab and finished iReady and Fastbridge assessments. We will review everything we have learned so far in math. We will have our ice cream party celebrating our addition and subtraction fact fluency. Science: We are learning about forces and motion. The students learned about forces in nature, like wind. They had to be the wind and blow their sheep from the pen to the pasture. They compared blowing with and without a straw to determine the number puffs they needed to get their sheep to the pasture. They will be building a roller coaster next week! Have a great weekend! Laura The Hello Amazing Parents!!
Next week we will take our online iReady assessment in reading and math. This is an important assessment which our staff looks at for placement, ability grouping, student data, and intervention. Please make sure your child has plenty of sleep, breakfast, and is prepared for school each day so they can be successful and do their absolute best each and every day. Don't forget we have some very important theme and STEM days coming up that we need supplies for. Here is the signup: Curriculum: Writing & Reading: Students will do a major opinion writing about their book and characters they have been reading from their book series. The students are really getting to know their characters and are enjoying sharing what they have learned while reading. We finished our wonderful read aloud book: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. The students loved it. I am going to get another book from this same author because she is so good! They will get to read my favorite, Because of Winn Dixie in 3rd grade. They will take a major reading assessment this week. Grammar and Word Works: We will be reviewing red words and phonics skills until the end of the year. We will be reviewing contractions, complex sentences, and quotation marks. Science-The students are continuing to work on their life cycle projects in STEM lab. You will be able to see these during Spring Showcase. We will begin our next unit: Forces in Motion on Monday. This is a fun unit and they will build a roller coaster. Have a wonderful weekend, Laura Hello Amazing Parents,
This week has been a struggle. My job is to teach your student to be successful and be the be the best person they can be. We have had several students that are continuing to not follow simple directions like not touching the walls (germs & ruins bulletin boards), not listening to directions, missing assignments, talking with friends and then complaining they don't have enough time to finish their project/assignment, and I could go on. I feel bad for the students that are following the rules. I do expect for students to pay attention and learn. This week just the simple rules were difficult for some to follow. I kept reminding students and eventually had to enforce a "you choose, I choose" rule: You choose to break the rules, I choose a consequence. This isn't the way I want to teach, but it has come to that point with some students. Please make sure your child is completing assignments, reading every night, and make sure they are following rules at home. Having chores and rules at homes helps students learn responsibility and will help them eventually with a career and life's work. I do appreciate all your hard work and effort to help your child be amazing! Have any empty or dry markers you don’t need? Instead of throwing them away, donate them back to Crayola for them to be to repurposed. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing program devised to repurpose used markers rather than sending them to landfills! All around New Prospect Elementary, students and teachers will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. There will be an empty bin located by the lost and found for all your discarded markers. Highlighters and dry erase markers can also be included!
