When will it take place: On Monday and Thursday after school until 4pm with our coaches (NPE teachers and parents)

We don't have school on Monday because of MLK day. Enjoy!
Tuesday afternoon is our Brain Building day! The students love this and it gives our 2nd grade teacher team time to plan and organize data, information, and curriculum.
Curriculum:
Writing: I am so impressed with what great poets we have in our class. I think this is the best group of poetry writers I have ever had! The students have been sharing their wonderful poems with the class. We will continue this into February.
Reading: We are amping up reading by reading with "bigger scoops", "snap words", and expression. We are also discussing how to read dialogue and keeping a picture in your mind of what you are reading to help you understand the story. I have been BAS testing with each student and just finished this week. On Friday I started a individual reading assessment with each student. I will be entering these grades in Home Access as soon as I complete everyone's assessment.
Word Work: We have been learning about the /igh/ sound and the /le/ sound. We will continue with the /le/ sound since this covers so many words (ble, cle, kle, etc.) We are reviewing adjectives and verbs and will concentrate on irregular verbs this week.
Math: The students took a quiz on Thursday. Grades are entered on Home Access and quizzes will be sent home in Thursday folders. Don't forget to do iReady math at home. Also students always have homework on Tuesday and Thursdays, so check your child's folder to make sure they are completing their home correctly. Some students are not handing this in on time.
Many students are still struggling with math fluency facts. Please review these a little each night so your child can be successful in math :)
Science: We continue to study astronomy. This week we learned about why we have seasons, what temperature it is in different parts of the world, the northern and southern hemisphere and why they have different seasons. Last week we learned about the sun and shadows. We made a gnome dial, but we haven't had warm enough weather with sun and no wind to create our shadows outside. Hopefully this week will be better. Please make sure and complete the homework about the sunrise and sunset. Don't forget the back side. This is due Tuesday.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Laura Lamaster Taylor
