Dear Parents!
Oh My Gosh....I have the best parents in the world. I feel so blessed this week with the sweet and thoughtful notes, candy, presents, gift cards, and flowers. I can't thank you enough, but it is not about the gifts, it is about the children and I have to tell you I feel so fortunate to have had your child this year. Friday we will have a beach bum day, so students can bring their sun glasses, a beach towel, and their favorite book to read at the "beach" Thank you for everyone volunteering to bring in things for our theme days this week. You are the best! Moms, have a wonderful Mother's Day! Curriculum: Science: The students loved playing the games and puzzles they made during science. We will learn about economics. To help learn economics I would like the students to bring in something to sell on the last week of school. It can be something they can make, then students will have a market day where they will purchase other students goods or services with their Lamaster bucks. If you have questions about this please email me and I can answer your questions. Writing/English: Students reviewed the /aw/ and learned the /au/ . We didn't have time to take the quiz on Friday, so we will finish this up on Monday and have a phonics review this week. Reading: I sent home the last reading assessment. I was so please with how well everyone did on this test! They also completed the Fastbridge test and everyone made big improvements! So proud of them! Math: We have been reviewing this week and will continue to review next week. The students are loving the Prodigy math program. I hope this is something that will help keep their math skills sharp over the summer. I will be putting the math assessment from their math student binders in their cumulative folder, so if you are interested in seeing this information please let me know ASAP before I do this on Monday. Have a wonderful weekend, Laura Hello Wonderful Parents!
We finished FastBridge except for a few students that were absent. The students did an amazing job. Their graphs are going up, up, up :) We are working fast and furiously to get our Spring Showcase projects completed by Thursday. Your child has selected to either do a game or a puzzle (or preapproved project). Most of the students have completed their 10 questions & answers for their 1st life cycle last week and they completed their 10 questions & answers for their 2nd life cycle this week. I conferenced with the students about their projects to make sure they were on track and what I found was that the students needed help with spelling. I helped as much as I had time for and told them to go back and edit their questions. This is difficult for a 2nd grader to edit their own work, especially when they aren't sure of the spelling of many words. If you could take a look at their questions and answers to make sure they are spelled correctly it would make playing the games and puzzles much easier and more fun if we can read them :) I gave each student an envelope to put all their puzzle, questions, instructions, playing pieces, dice, game board (if it fits) so they can bring this home and work on this over the weekend. They need to color their game board and pictures of their life cycle. For the puzzle, we are putting the questions and answers on one side and a picture of their life cycles on the other side. I will laminate these for the students next week and they can cut them out. Also, we are going to be doing some fun themed culminating activities. I will need supplies to pull this off, so be looking for a supply list from Signup Genius to volunteer to bring in supplies for these days. Don't forget to come to Spring Showcase on Thursday. They are getting all excited about this. Curriculum: Science: Projects are due Wednesday, I hope to wrap these projects up on Monday so students can put their finishing touches on them this week. English: We are working on reviewing everything we have learned and editing writing. They will write their last opinion writing about a book they are or have read and turn this in for a writing grade. Reading: The students are loving reading in their Reading Book Clubs. They have so much to share with each other about how much they are enjoying their book. They have been video taping themselves and uploading these into SeeSaw so I can read and hear what they have written about their book. These videos are great! Math: Both 2.2 & 3.2: We took our last Unit assessment. The students did a fantastic job. Our class average was 97% (with one student that still needs to finish). I introduced them to . a new math game that teaches fact fluency and math concepts. It is called Prodigy. I set it to their level (so 3.2 will be on 3rd grade) The students love it because they play with other students. It is very interactive and the students don't feel like they are learning...but they are :) I will give them their password and they can play this over the summer to help review what they have learned this year. Enjoy your weekend, Laura Dear Wonderful Parents!
Finally we see the sun! Hopefully this will last through the weekend. Curriculum: Science: We have started our Life Cycle projects. They are making a puzzle (I have the template) or a game using at least 10 questions from 2 different types of life cycles (plant or animal). I want them to take their time and do a good job. This isn't something to rush through. Their homework tonight is to complete their first 10 questions for their animal or plant life cycle. I conferenced with several students, but will be meeting next week with each student to make sure they are on track with this project. I told them if they finish these projects and want to select another project to do they need to ask me first, but as long as it is something reasonable and they are learning, I should be good with it. English/Writing: The students have been learning about opinion writing. This week we wrote about the characters in the book we are reading together: Saving Shiloh. Dear Amazing Parents of Amazing Children!
Let me just say I am so thankful for such a sweet class. It has been difficult with testing, schedules, recess at different times, keeping quiet, etc... Let me just say, this has been difficult, but our class has been great!! We have 2 more days of testing and then we will be done. We were testing buddies with another 5th grade class and the students have written letters, created cootie catchers, and written jokes for encouragement. I have heard from the teacher and some of the students--they absolutely love the notes from the children! Curriculum: Science: We are watching caterpillars begin to create a chrysalis. The students are fascinated to see them crawl up the side of the jar and hang from the top, just like they are hanging from a branch in nature. Hopefully we will see these become a butterfly soon. We created a life cycle chart for the butterfly out of macaroni, planted wheat seeds, made sprouted whole wheat bread (big hit, more of this to come!), and we are watching our lima beans grow in the window. Next week we will be talking about the life cycle of a frog, take a seed walk outside, and begin our projects for Spring Showcase. Your child might be asking to bring some things from home to help create their project. They will be creating a puzzle, game, or their choice of project (has to be approved by me :) to illustrate their knowledge of the lifecycle of 2 different living things. English/Writing: We are learning about synonym and antonyms this week. Some of the students have been learning about analogies using synonyms and antonyms. They will be completing an activity demonstrating their knowledge of these concepts. Reading: We continue to study fiction and students are really enjoying getting into their reading club groups and reading their book series together. Next week I will be meeting with each group and discussing the main character, summarizing the story, and favorite parts (with reasons why). The students took a quiz today after I read the excellent story Enemy Pie. These grades are posted on Home access. I am so pleased with how the students did on this quiz. They are using sentence starters (this helps them reinforce the question they are suppose to answer) and used details from the story to support their opinion of the story. Math: 2.2- I sent home the quiz the students took last week in math. We will have another quiz over arrays, story problems, and premultiplication concepts. Continue to have your child get on iReady for math. I have noticed that some of the students have not been getting on this at home. 3.2-We continue to study fractions. We began to compare fractions using models and number lines. We will have a quiz on Friday over everything we have learned so far in this unit. Have a wonderful weekend, Laura Lamaster Dear Amazing Parents,
Well, we made it through Friday the 13th! We will still be testing next week, so please be mindful that parents are not allowed in the building when we have to have it quiet for testing. We have partnered with Mrs. Flaherty's 5th grade class. We wrote letters, while we reviewed letter writing skills and on Friday we wrote another encouraging note along with a joke. We thought they could use a little humor while testing. I am including treats with these sweet notes. I know the 5th graders loved the first letters and will love the 2nd letter, joke and treat. I love this class! They are so sweet!! Curriculum: Science-We are learning about life cycles. We started with the plant cycle. We went outside and collected seeds and then brought them in and looked at them under a hand lens. We discovered that bugs live in pinecones! The students loved it. I also bought some other seeds (and of course we had popcorn seeds). We made a plant cycle booklet and we are comparing 2 lima beans. One bean we soaked in water first and the other we didn't do anything before we put it in our wet paper towel. Hopefully these will sprout and we can watch the roots grow down and the stems and leaves grow up. Next week we will hopefully sprout wheat and begin to watch the life cycle of a butterfly. Word Work: Word Their Way group is working on all kinds of skills including prefixes, suffixes, and difficult words. Word Detective group is studying the hard /g/ sound: got, glad, grab, glen, gave, gale, grin, gulf, gate, game, grave, grape, gosh, glide, glass, grill, globe gull, gum, grip, grit gust Red Words: great, find, very, Wednesday, excellent, when, Thursday, English-We will learning about: antonyms, synonyms, and homographs Writing & Reading: The students have been reading and writing about characters in their new reading book clubs. In writing they are reading their own book and writing their opinion about their story. We are working on introductions and supporting what they think if the main character by adding supporting interesting details from the story. In Reading they are now with a partner reading books together. They will soon discuss and share their books with the class. In writing they will also be sharing their opinion writing with our class as well. Math-We continue to study operations and algebraic thinking. This is the beginning stages and laying the foundation of multiplication which they will need for 3rd grade. They learned how to group arrays to show how a number is odd or even. They took a quiz on Friday over odd and even numbers. These grades are entered on home access and will be going home with the students on Thursday. They are also learning how to make equal groups. They will be taking a quiz on Friday over this. 3.2 students continue to review the skills taught throughout the year with a weekly spiral review. They are studying fractions and will have a quiz on Friday over what they have learned. Soon they will be applying fractions to solve real word problems. Have a wonderful weekend, Laura Dear Parents,
I am going to be using the Remind App to be sending homework assignments to the students. I sent a math assignment last week and will send an English assignment. Please let me know if you don't have the Remind app and I will send you a link. Also, please let me know if you like the lessons. I always appreciate the honest feedback. Science: We finished up studying about the sun, earth, moon, and stars. The students had fun making moon patterns with Oreos. This was messy and challenging, but they enjoyed it. We had enough Oreos to have a snack. Thanks to everyone that contributed. The students really appreciated it! We will be finishing our gnome sundials. We didn't have enough sun in the morning this week, so hopefully we can finish these before spring break. We will be learning about nutrition in health. English/Writing: The students launched their catapults and measured how far they went. They had 3 attempts they had to record. Then they wrote about if their hypothesis was correct. This week they will be writing a nonfiction how to. The students should have an idea of what they want to write about. They started their table of contents and will be working on specific vocabulary they need for their writing. They will finish this by Friday for a grade. I will be conferencing with each of the students to make sure they are on track. We will be learning about commas in a series. In Word Work we will be learning about the hard /c/ sound. Skill words: can, cap, cup, class, cliff, crib, crash, came cave, cup, clap, camp, card. Red Words: Excellent, Friday, any, home, when, there Reading: We will have a reading assessment on Thursday. This will be a nonfiction story. They will need to determine the main idea and use supporting details to support this. They will also need to pull out the most important detail and tell why it is so important. We will have nonfiction reading clubs this week. Math: We will start out math assessment on Wednesday (no TAG) and leave Thursday for anyone that doesn't finish or was absent. On Friday we will have a review and catch-up day and pre assessment for the next math unit. Have a wonderful weekend, Laura Dear Parents!
This was such a busy week! We built catapults, wrote like scientists in our Science Lab Report, had our progress monitoring for our BAS reading, and much more! Thank you to everyone who contributed to our science fund. It is greatly appreciated by the students! Curriculum this week: Science: We will study the sun patterns (we weren't able to complete this because no sun or too cold...so we are extending it to the upcoming week). We will also study phases of the moon by making Oreo cookies look like the phases of the moon. English: We are going to review parts of speech and reinforce punctuation and capitalization. I am noticing when I read what the students write in their writing journals, that they aren't even taking the time to capitalize the beginning of the sentence and have forgotten?? that you capitalize a proper noun. I also noticed when I was reading their science lab reports that they weren't ending their questions with the proper punctuation. So...we are going to work on this in the upcoming week. The skill this week is /y/ as a vowel. The skill words are: baby, candy, bunny, mommy, fly, try, cry, reply, gym, lymph, gypsum, yellow, young, yell, yet, you, funny, mommy The red words are: excellent, Friday, any, been, found, Thursday Writing: The students are going to rework their catapult to make it bigger, stronger, faster and we will then measure how far our marshmallow will travel when launched from our catapult. We will also write a science lab report when we make a bridge/house and have a class competition to see how strong it is (how many books it will hold). The kids always LOVE this...I can't wait! Reading: The students have improved so much in their BAS reading levels. I am going to update levels RAZ kids to reflect their new levels. Remember in RAZ kids that their levels are lower than the BAS levels. Don't be surprised if your child goes up several levels. They really rocked their BAS progress monitoring. Yahoo!! Math: We took a quiz on Thursday. The results will be posted when everyone finishes the quiz. I still have a few absent that need to complete this. I will send these home in student folders on Thursday. We will have a quiz over fractions on Friday. This is for both 3.2 and 2.2, but at different depth and level. I will send you lessons using Remind, so please look for these so your child can be successful and prepared for the unit assessment the following week. Have a wonderful weekend, Laura Dear Parents,
I hope everyone is enjoying a little extra time with family. I haven't heard from parents so I hope that means Digital Learning Day is going well. Again, here is the link to all the resources: http://bit.ly/2F6UI3j Curriculum: Science & reading-We are studying the sun, moon, and stars. We will have an activity to help reinforce the phases of the moon since this is such a difficult concept. The students will be learning about the shadows made from the sun when we create a gnome sundial outside and the students will see how the shadow changes from 8:00, 11:00, & 2:00. We will be reading about the sun, moon and earth in reading as we are learning about text features and text structure with our nonfiction reading. We will have an activity to help reinforce the phases of the moon since this is such a difficult concept. In reading the students visited our reading café in our Learning Lab and sat down at a table and feasted on the nonfiction books they wanted to take a "bite" out of. They formed book clubs and they enjoyed reading and learning together. Writing-Students have been learning about how to write a science lab report. We are thinking like a scientist when we write. They are learning about what is the important question to ask, hypothesis, materials, plan/procedure, results, and conclusion. They wrote and experimented to see how far a glue stick would roll off a ramp. They also wrote a lab report about what would happen to a marshmallow when you put it in the microwave. The students loved this!! This week we will be changing up one thing in one of their experiments to see how their results change. / For word work this week we are continuing to study the /oo/ sound and review since we only had 3 days last week. I want to review the /old/, /nt/, /th/ and several other phonics skills we had some difficulty with. Look at last weeks email for the quiz skill words and red words. Math: We will have a quiz on Friday or Monday, depending on how much we get covered this week. For 2.2 we are going to be learning about dividing a shape into parts, understanding how this relates to fractions. The vocabulary for this week is horizontal, vertical, array, pentagon, polygon (they get these confused) 3.2-We will finish geometry and begin fractions, relating how divided shapes make fractions. We will eventually get into equal fractions, adding and subtracting fractions. Vocabulary-numerator, denominator, pentagon, polygon, quadrilateral, parallelogram, parallel, perpendicular, acute, obtuse, right, isosceles, scalene, and obtuse triangles. Have a wonderful weekend!
