Dear Amazing Parents,
Well, we made it through Friday the 13th!
We will still be testing next week, so please be mindful that parents are not allowed in the building when we have to have it quiet for testing. We have partnered with Mrs. Flaherty's 5th grade class. We wrote letters, while we reviewed letter writing skills and on Friday we wrote another encouraging note along with a joke. We thought they could use a little humor while testing. I am including treats with these sweet notes. I know the 5th graders loved the first letters and will love the 2nd letter, joke and treat. I love this class! They are so sweet!!
Curriculum:
Science-We are learning about life cycles. We started with the plant cycle. We went outside and collected seeds and then brought them in and looked at them under a hand lens. We discovered that bugs live in pinecones! The students loved it. I also bought some other seeds (and of course we had popcorn seeds). We made a plant cycle booklet and we are comparing 2 lima beans. One bean we soaked in water first and the other we didn't do anything before we put it in our wet paper towel. Hopefully these will sprout and we can watch the roots grow down and the stems and leaves grow up. Next week we will hopefully sprout wheat and begin to watch the life cycle of a butterfly.
Word Work: Word Their Way group is working on all kinds of skills including prefixes, suffixes, and difficult words. Word Detective group is studying the hard /g/ sound:
got, glad, grab, glen, gave, gale, grin, gulf, gate, game, grave, grape, gosh, glide, glass, grill, globe gull, gum, grip, grit gust
Red Words: great, find, very, Wednesday, excellent, when, Thursday,
English-We will learning about: antonyms, synonyms, and homographs
Writing & Reading: The students have been reading and writing about characters in their new reading book clubs. In writing they are reading their own book and writing their opinion about their story. We are working on introductions and supporting what they think if the main character by adding supporting interesting details from the story. In Reading they are now with a partner reading books together. They will soon discuss and share their books with the class. In writing they will also be sharing their opinion writing with our class as well.
Math-We continue to study operations and algebraic thinking. This is the beginning stages and laying the foundation of multiplication which they will need for 3rd grade. They learned how to group arrays to show how a number is odd or even. They took a quiz on Friday over odd and even numbers. These grades are entered on home access and will be going home with the students on Thursday. They are also learning how to make equal groups. They will be taking a quiz on Friday over this.
3.2 students continue to review the skills taught throughout the year with a weekly spiral review. They are studying fractions and will have a quiz on Friday over what they have learned. Soon they will be applying fractions to solve real word problems.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Laura
