Dear Parents,
I am sorry this is late. I always like you to have the upcoming information on Friday so you have the week to prepare, but the weekend got away from me--my apologies.
Last week we had waffles as we studied the changes in matter. Students had a debate about an egg, is it a solid, liquid? Then we threw the egg against the whiteboard and we had another discussion about if the egg had changed? Was this reversible or irreversible? Then we did the same with a hard boiled egg. Could we change the hard boiled egg back again? Then we discussed the solid, liquid, and gas ingredients of waffles as we made made them. It was a yummy time in science. This week we will be building villages using codes and map directions. They have to construct and deconstruct blocks to make their city. Students will be pulled back to have an individual oral examination about the physical properties of matter this week.
Grammar/English-we will be studying the /ia/ vowel team. The Red Words this week are: very, could, have. We will be studying prefixes this week and students will be making a prefix present booklet to match the correct prefix with the appropriate base word.
Reading/Writing-We will be studying nonfiction reading and writing. We will relate this to our science and students will be writing about an experiment the students will be doing next week (week of 10/9) with water, corn syrup, & oil==fun stuff.
Math-We finished our first unit 1 assessment. I have sent home math data binders to anyone who emailed me requesting this. Please send this back with your child so they can bring this back to math class. We will be concentrating on addition facts and timed tests. They will graph their increased growth in their data binder, so they will need their data binders in math class.
This 2nd unit in math will be concentration on math operations. We will be looking at fact families, addition and subtraction strategies. We will have a quiz on Wednesday. If your child is straddling with their addition facts, you might want to buy some flash cards and review these at home. There are also some very good review games you can play at home that will help students with fact fluency: Splash Math, SumDog, and as always RedBird is very helpful with all areas of math. Don't forget about Bedtime Math for helping students understand how math is used in our everyday world.
Have a wonderful week,
