Hello Amazing Parents,
It was a good week! The students had Brain Building, they earned an little extra time in the sunshine on Thursday, students created rams and tested if cards when faster on tile or carpet, and we celebrated Joseph's birthday!.
Curriculum this week:
Social Studies: We learned about Juliette Gordon Low and her work with young women and Girl Scouts. We will finish learning about Jimmy Carter next week and students will create a famous person's project to present to the class. They can choose between a poem, poster, IT presentation Power Point/Google Slide), SeeSaw presentation, or student choice (with teacher aproval).
Word Work: Next week we will be reviewing suffixes and learning about tion, ion, and ture. We will continue to study parts of speech.
Math: We learned our geometric shapes last week along with their attributes (sides, faces, vertices, angles) This week we will learn standard 2G.2 which is partitioning rectangles into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them. This lays the groundwork for multiplication and the vocabulary is important. Students struggle with the difference between rows and columns. They also want to put 3 lines to make 3 columns instead of 2 lines to make 3 columns. Watch for this common mistake on homework. We will have a quiz on Friday over 2G.2.
Reading: Students have been working on reading nonfiction books, reading for information, taking notes, and sharing with their book clubs. Thursday we had almost every group move up to the Epic category of learning from each other and being a good team member! This week we will continue this work and begin to look at test structure (cause and effect, problem/solution, how-to, list, timelines, pro/con, compare/contrast).
Writing: Students created their own experiment with a car and ramp. They measured how far the car went on the carpet compared to tile. They then compared their results to their hypothesis and wrote a conclusion. We will continue to do this purposeful, fun writing in our Science Lab Books!
Have a great weekend,
Laura
