2nd Grade Curriculum:
Hello
It was wonderful to see so many attend curriculum night on Thursday! If you have further questions conferences will begin at the end of September and we can address them then.
Reading:
This week in reading we will continue with our Reading Units of Study. The focus will be on tackling tricky words they encounter while reading. Practicing these word-solving strategies while reading print will help them read with the rhythms of natural speech. Throughout the next few weeks, we will be assessing student understanding of the reading concepts through unit checkpoints. The post assessment for this unit will be during the first week of October. Please remember that your child should be reading for 15 minutes each night and logging it with a parent signature into their agenda.
Writing:
In writing we will begin to finish our work on noticing the author’s craft and begin learning strategies about how to study their own authors. This will help them to learn a repertoire of strategies for describing what they see, feel, hear, and experience in their narratives; for establishing a clear setting and situation; for spotlighting a strong feeling or beautiful image, and more. We will be assessing student understanding of the writing concepts through unit checkpoints. The post assessment for this unit will be during the first week of October.
Phonics:
This week we reviewed and practiced the /sh/ blend. Next week, we will learn the /ch/ blend in a word. Follow up by asking your child to tell you words with those blends.
Social Studies:
We continue our work on Unit 1 – Regions of Georgia. Students will have a quiz on Tuesday Sept. 10th identifying the 3 major rivers in Georgia. Students will work on a choice board next week to review the unit. A study resource pack will go home in Thursday papers Sept. 12th and the Unit Post Assessment will be given Tuesday, Sept. 17th.
MATH
Math 2.1:We will have a quiz over NBT 1 & 2 on Monday. This will cover being able to write and identify numbers using base ten blocks & standard form. Understanding place value (10 tens=100), the value of digits up to 999 and skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. This can get tricky when you count backwards and need to continue the pattern. We will begin learning about standards NBT 3 & 4. This covers identifying and writing numbers in word, expanded, and standard form. We will also compare 2 numbers (up to 3 digits).
2.2 Math- This week students practiced several strategies for adding and subtracting two 3 digit numbers. On Monday 9/9 students will take a quiz on 2 NBT 6- add up to four 2 digit numbers and 2 NBT 7- add and subtract within 1000
3.1 Math: Students continue to work on Unit 1. The students will take a quiz on Monday 9/9. This quiz will include MGSE3. NBT.2- Fluently add and subtract within 1000. and MGSE3.NBT.1 – Using place value to round numbers to nearest tens and hundreds. We will next work on MGSE3.MD.3 which is drawing a scaled picture graph to represent a data set with several categories. This standard will be assessed on Monday 9/16.
Thank you,
2nd Grade Team
