Hello Amazing Parents,
Well, we have finished another week! Congratulations to Neveah Allen and Alex Miyazawa received our Character Counts award for respect. Contratulation! I am finding that several of the students are not completing assignments which impacts their grades. Please keep up-to-date with this blog so you will know what your child needs to be completing each week. We had a map and a democracy vocabulary quiz this week. The students did very well on these; however, we are going to have a major democracy assessment on Monday. Please study over the weekend. Refer to last weeks notes for social studies to help guide and prepare your child for this test. I sent all the students home with their social studies book and their notebook filled with our notes we have been taking in class. I can tell many of the students have studied and were very prepared for these quizzes this week. They felt very confident and ready so they could be successful. It makes a big difference :) After our democracy assessment, we will start a unit on pollution. Your child needs to go on my website under science lessons and begin to watch the BrainPop videos, complete the quizzes, and submit them to me. I noticed that for the democracy BrainPop videos many of the students watched the video, but didn't submit the quiz. They will need to make this up so I can post these grades. They will also be making a Pollution Solution brochure that they will be presenting in class and be putting on our bulletin board. We will also have another reading assessment this week. Since it is a short week and we have a field trip we won't have a computer lesson this week in reading. If you are in Ms. Lamaster's math: Sorry, it is a short week and we have TAG and a field trip, so it would be too much to complete a computer lesson this week. We will continue numbers, operations, and algebraic thinking. The students are doing better with their multiplication facts, but still need a lot of practice with this. A few of the skills we will be reinforcing and learning this week are: variables, multiples, fractors, products, prime, composite, multiplication of 2 x 1 digit #, 2 x 2 digit number showing several ways to do this, division of 2 x 1 digit. Homework: IXL 4th grade: Monday-D.14; Tuesday-D.15; Thursday-D.17 Have a wonderful weekend, Laura Lamaster Hi Amazing Parents!
A big shout out to Carter Haglund, Anthony White, and Isabella Portilla who were running for student council and presenting in front of the class. It isn't easy to do this and I am proud of all of them for stepping out of their comfort zone and courageously trying be our "voice" and represent our class and 3rd grade in New Prospect's Student Council. Congratulations to Isabella Portilla for being our Student Council representative and to Anthony White for being our 1st alternate. Please make sure you send in your field trip permission and $ as soon as possible. Each week for language arts the students are expected to read each night and fill out reading log (due each Monday), a vocabulary activity, a computer lesson, and sometimes an interactive notebook activity. All these activities are expected to be completed by Friday. If your child doesn't finish any of these activities during our reading class, they might need to complete these assignments at home. Please keep up-to-date with these assignments and make sure your child has these assignments completed by Friday. In reading we worked on using sentence starters to answers questions to prepare for our reading test. Students took their reading test on Friday and we will review these this week. I will be sharing these with you during parent teacher conferences. I am excited about starting a mystery reading unit next week. We will be reading a lot of mysteries. I will be sending reading homework they can do for their reading logs. We have been studying democracy in social studies. This is a lot of material to cover in a short period of time and the Democracy test is coming up Monday, October 3. I will send home the students interactive social studies notebooks so you can study over the weekend, but here are the areas it will cover so you can begin reviewing at home:
MATH (If you have Ms. Lamaster for math) Thank you parents for keeping up with the IXL homework. I check it frequently to make sure students are completing these and doing a good job. Math requires practice and to learn and remember key concepts. I appreciate all your support at home to make your child successful! We continue to study numbers and operations, multiplication & division: Homework: Monday-IXL 4th grade D.5 Wednesday-IXL 4th grade D.6 Friday IXL 4th grade D.8 Have a great week! Laura Lamaster Week of 9/21/15
Hello Wonderful Parents, If students ran for Student Council they need to make a poster and prepare a short presentation for the class. They will present this on Friday morning, 9/23. I am looking forward to meeting with you and discussing your child's progress in 3rd grade. Sometimes it takes a village to help each student succeed :) If you haven't signed up for a parent/teacher conference, please sign-up on this website: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c084daead2ea3f58-parentteacher If you can't find a time that works for you let me know and we will try and work something out. New Prospect is in the process of earning Digital Citizenship certification by Common Sense Media. It is a very esteemed certification; all schools in Fulton County are working toward it. Ms. McLeod and Ms. Bercher are in the process of training students on the following subjects concerning Digital Citizenship. Third grade is learning about: What's Cyberbullying? Super Digital Citizen, Privacy Rules, Selling Stereotypes, Twalkers Module. The students get to complete lessons on iPads as they are learning! If you are interested in more information: Family Tip Sheets on most of the above topics can be found at: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/lessons/family-tip-sheets/en, Family Tip Sheets | Common Sense Media www.commonsensemedia.org Our students were the first classroom to use the new Chrome laptops during our writing lesson. It took awhile to get them up and running, but we did it and the students really enjoyed it. One of the students said, "I feel like a grownup." :) Just a few reminders: *Be sure and hand in your field trip permission slips. I have to have these slips and $ collected this week. *Field Trip-10/7: I will have your child's field trip shirt at school for them to w Put a Post-it note on the page in your book where you’ll stop reading tonight. When you get to the Post-it, retell your book to yourself. What are the big steps in the timeline of your story? For each one, ask yourself, “What does this make me think, know, or wonder?” Write that thought on a Post-it. Stick it in the part of your book that the thought goes with. Be ready to share these thoughts with your partner tomorrow. ear that day. When you paid $ to the PTA it was to cover the cost of this shirt that we use for field trips and Field Day in the spring. *I am still missing a few technology forms. These forms give your child permission to use the iPads and computer programs that were listed on the back of the form. Curriculum: Reading: Make sure your child is reading each night and writing it down in their reading log. I will be collecting these every Monday and giving them a new reading log to fill out for the week. This week I would like your child to reflect and think about what they are reading: Put a Post-it note on the page in your book where you’ll stop reading tonight. Writing: Students shared their narrative stories to the class and we used the Chrome laptops! Science/Social Studies-Georgia Habitat tests were sent home. We started our Democracy unit which also covers map skills, major rivers and mountain ranges. Our test over this will be Friday, 9/30. I will be sending home our interactive notebooks, homework, and study packets to help them be prepared for this test. If you are in Ms. Lamaster's math class: The students did a fantastic job on their Unit 1 test. They also took a quiz over basic facts relating to Numbers in Base Ten, addition & subtraction. We are starting Unit 2 with Numbers & Operations. This includes multiplication and division, which means we will be taking timed tests over multiplication. Multiplication facts are vital to learn division, fractions, and many other related concepts, so it is important they know their facts. We will be spending a lot of time making sure they know their facts. In addition to our IXL homework we will begin to use the skills we are learning to write math real-world problems. Students learn so much more when they have to be the creator and then share these with other students. The students love to solve other these too! Monday: 4th grade IXL D.1 Wednesday: 4th grade IXL D.2 Friday: 4th grade IXL D.3 Have a wonderful week! Laura Lamaster Hello Amazing Parents,
Parent teacher conferences will begin soon. Please go on this website to sign-up for a time that is convenient with your schedule: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c084daead2ea3f58-parentteacher Parents our school will be hosting a Georgia Milestones presentation for parents on 9/19/16, 11:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m. in the Media Center. We will also have a DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP PRESENTATION, 9/26/16 11:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m. IN THE MEDIA CENTER. We are planning a field trip to go along with our Rocks, Minerals, and Soil unit (which will be after Democracy). This field trip will be to Dahlonega, Consolidated Gold Mine on October 7. This is an amazing field trip and the students love it. They get to tour an actual gold mine and pan for gems. If you are interested in volunteering let me know ASAP. You will need to fill out the online volunteer information before you can go. Reading: We had a reading test on Thursday. We started our Book Clubs/Literature Circles this week. We are reading 2 different books and I love both of them. During our reading stations I will be meeting with each groups and discussing what they have read. The best way you can help your child be successful in school is to improve their reading. The best way to improve reading it to READ. Please make sure your child is reading every night for AT LEAST 25 minutes. This can be a nice quiet time to unwind from the day and discuss/read a good book together. Math: (if your child has me for math) IXL is not working for now. If it does start working by Monday here are the assignments: Monday-C.4; Wednesday-G.1; Friday-G.2 I will assign other independent activities if we can't get this working. We will have our first unit test on Friday. We reviewed the study guide together on Friday to make sure they had the correct answers so they can study this over the weekend. Writing: Students had their first graded "Quick Write" personal narrative writing. I am grading these now, but I am enjoying reading them. One thing I can tell is that students are struggling with indenting paragraphs. We will continue to work on this, but maybe when you are reading with your child, you can point out how they indent each paragraph and skip lines when it is a new paragraph. I will discuss these Quick Writes during parent/teacher conferences. Science We had our first science test Friday over Georgia Habitats. They also had a quiz this week and I sent the results home on Friday. We will begin Democracy and important land features on Monday. Have an amazing weekend, Laura Lamaster mslamaster.weebly.com @laura_lamaster Dear Parents, It was great to see everyone last night at Curriculum night. If you were unable to attend, I am putting a copy the 3rd grade handbook and our PP presentation on my website/blog. Click on the green buttons to view the 3rd Grade Handbook & Curriculum Night Presentation. I sent home Student Council Forms on Thursday (along with many other forms :)
Don't forget to get Student Council forms in by Thursday. This will be a short week, but a very busy week. We have STAR math (if your child has me for math) and they will have STAR reading this week. Please see below for content/subject details: Reading We will have reading test this week. I have many parents that ask how they can help their child be successful on these tests. The best way is to read with your child each night, listen, ask questions, guide them to higher level thinking, and keep up with those reading logs. If you aren't reading with your child, please ask them questions to make sure they are understanding what they are reading. We will start our first Book Club with several amazing trade books your child will love! Writing: Students that weren't here on Friday will start their On Demand writing assessment. We will also learn about friendly letter writing this week by writing letters to our troops. Science We will have our first test Friday. This will be over Georgia Habitats. I sent home a study packet on Friday. If your child wasn't here on Friday they can pick one up on Tuesday. Please make sure your child brings the study packet back every day since we will be reviewing these together. Math (if your child has me for math) We will have our first unit test next week (9/12). I will send home study guides so they can study. Please make sure and return these daily (put them in their binder) so we can review them at school as well. We started timed math addition fact fluency and will begin to graph these results to set goals and see progress. These will be kept in their math data binders. Homework this week: Short week, so IXL is Tuesday and Thursday :) Tuesday: 4th grade IXL B.9 Thursday: 4th grade IXL C.7 Have a wonderful weekend, Laura @laura_lamaster mslamaster.weebly.com |
