Dear Parents,
Last week we had pancakes as we studied the changes in matter. Students had a debate about an egg, is it a solid, liquid? Then we threw a hard boiled egg against the wall and we had a discussion about if the egg had changed? Was this reversible or irreversible? Then we did the same with a raw egg. Could we change the raw egg back again? Then we discussed the solid, liquid, and gas ingredients of pancakes as we made made them. It was a yummy time in science. This week we looked at marshmallows before and after putting them in the microwave to see if matter can change. Is it a physical or chemical change? We also looked at the properties and characteristics of Twizzlers. Would you use them to build a bridge? Why not? How could we change the Twizzler to a different type of matter? Next week we will be reviewing and preparing for our Matter test on Friday. I sent home study guides with the students with their Thursday papers.
Grammar/English/Writing-we will be studying the /ia/ vowel team. The Red Words this week are: very, could, have. We will be studying irregular nouns and reviewing collective nouns. Students will continue to write their nonfiction teaching pieces. I will be conferencing with students soon about these.
Reading-We will be studying nonfiction reading and writing. We will relate our reading to our writing so students can be reading examples of good mentor texts to help them model good writing.
Math-We finished our first unit 1 assessment and I have been sharing these with parents during parent/teacher conferences. Please see below if you have not scheduled your parent teacher conference yet. We will be concentrating on subtracting and addition facts, adding one and 2 digit numbers, word problems with adding and subtracting and timed tests. The students are working towards an ice cream party. If they complete all their time fact fluency tests they get ice cream with their choice of everything on top!
This 2nd unit in math will be concentration on math operations. We will be looking at fact families, addition and subtraction strategies. We had a quiz on Friday and results will be sent home in Thursday papers. If your child is struggling with their addition and subtraction facts, you might want to buy some flash cards and review these at home. There are also some very good review games you can play at home that will help students with fact fluency: Splash Math, SumDog, and as always iReady is very helpful with all areas of math. Don't forget about Bedtime Math for helping students understand how math is used in our everyday world.
