Dear Parents,
Congratulations to our National School Lunch Week Grand Prize Winner Miles Fulz!!!! Way to go Miles! We also had several winners in our room for being expert students during math class: Ohad Michaeli and Pravna Lokhande. Keerthi Gopereddy was our student of the week. Congratulations to some pretty amazing students!
Our Book Fair Preview days is Thursday at 9:25 and our buying day is Monday 11/12. Make sure if you would like your child to buy books, send $ on Monday 11/12 :)
Curriculum this week:
Writing: Students are working on writing their how to teach us something. I can't wait to have students share these with the class. I am learning so much from the students when we conference about their writing. They will be working on using transition words, introductions, conclusions, and using the "lingo" vocabulary words that help to teach us about their subject.
Reading:
The students went to the library Friday and checked out nonfiction books. We continue to read nonfiction. I set up the students in RAZ Kids. They are able to get on this at home through Fulton County Launchpad to help with reading skills. They can read a story and then take a short assessment. iReady is also a great resource students can use at home through Fulton County Launchpad. iReady includes both reading and math reinforcement and is a great way to help students remember skills taught in school. We will be having a quiz next week over nonfiction book structure (heading, subheading, glossary, table of contents, index, bold words, diagrams, captions, etc.)
Word Work/Grammar:
Students will be learning the /ay/ sound. Every Monday they write a list of words to study for the practice quiz on Wednesday. If they pass this they don't have to take the quiz on Friday. Instead they have free time on my website with Word Detectives or Words Their Way. Many of the students passed this week, so they enjoyed having a little free time to explore and review skills taught.
We studied pronouns and reflexive pronouns. We will be studying verbs this week.
Math:
We continue to study addition, subtraction, fact fluency, fact families, word problems, difference, sum, and money. We started money this week. This is always a difficult concept. We don't have a lot of questions over this on the math assessment coming up, but they will need to know money, and how to add money up. We will be having a quiz over money this week. Our final Unit 2 assessment will be October 30. I will be sending home a study guide with Thursday papers so you can help your child before the assessment. Don't forget to go to iReady on the Fulton County Launchpad for math. This is a great way to help review math skills and help your child be successful.
Social Studies
The students are learning about Cherokee and Creek Indians in Georgia. They learned how to write their name in Cherokee. They loved this. They learned what the Native American Indians ate, games they played, homes, gardens, and next week we will learning more next week along with some famous Indian chiefs.
Have a wonderful weekend!
