We have officially survived the first week of school!
We learned so much about PAWS, how our classroom works, brownie points (the best one), and so much more. We have an awesome group of students and I can't wait to get to know each of them better through the year.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reminders:
Each night for homework the students have nightly reading. Currently we are starting off at 10 minutes of reading. Please feel free to go over if they would like. The log for the reading will be kept in the students agenda. On the right hand side, you (or the students) will write the title of the book, how long they read for, and initial it. That way I know they did this. Every week I will be randomly picking a day and giving a reward to all the students who read that night and logged it. Research has proven that if students read at home they will keep increasing their reading level, ability, and level of comprehension.
“Brain Building Time” will happen for your child once a month. Your child will rotate through four sessions. Guidance with Mrs. McLeod, Media Center with Mrs. Bercher, Enrichment Time with Mrs. Zarzour & Ms. Welch and Typing in the Computer Lab!
There will be an administrator in the typing session (in case of any issues), however, we would love it if we had two parent volunteers to run the session. All this would involve is getting the kids to sign on to the FC launch pad and get started with learning.com. Parents will be provided with Troubleshooting tips but once students get started it really runs itself. There will be 4 classes coming in for 30 minutes each. Please sign up here if you are interested: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080b4fa8a823a4fe3-brain.
One of the reasons we are instituting Brain Building is to allow dedicated time for our counselor, media spiciest and CSTs to work with students and share their areas of expertise without interrupting the normal day. Additionally, it provides our teachers with a block of time to really dive in and plan units targeted to their students’ individual areas of need.
**Our first Brain Building is this Tuesday, 8/14!**

Math:
Next week we will starting different elements of our curriculum and we start pre-assessments. I have tried my best to spread them out for the students sanity, and mine!
**On Monday, we will taking our math pre assessment. **
**On Tuesday, we will taking our writing pre assessment. **
We finished our FastBridge assessment. This gives me and you a clear view of where your student is compared to the norm for 2nd grade nation wide. This a computer test that we take to see where they are currently at in reading. We also use this information in regards for testing for advanced and accelerated placement.
We will also be starting math classes on Wednesday, the 15th. This will be our first official day of math class. We will spend the day reviewing place value. We typically spend a few weeks on each standard (depending on the students comprehension) then at the end will quiz them on the standard. Each unit lasts approximately 4-6 weeks. Attached here is the parent letter so you know what is exactly expected of them. This will also be in our Thursday folders this upcoming week.
