Dear Parents,
It has been a short, but very busy week!
Next week if College Week at New Prospect. If you are proud of the school you graduated from and would like to share in the fun, have your child bring in something to show your collegiate spirit to help decorate my door. On Friday they can wear jerseys to support their college teams.
Please make sure you have signed up for a parent/teacher conference by visiting my blog for the week of 9/4/18
Upcoming curriculum:
Science:
We are going to have our first social studies unit assessment on GA regions, rivers, and landforms. I sent home the study guide with Thursday papers. Please hang onto this and study over the weekend. The assessment will be on Wednesday. Next Monday we will start our first science unit on matter.
English:
The students will learn about the /ck/ sound this week. They will have a Word Work quiz on Friday over these words: tack, back, duck, smack, Bonus: pocket. I will also include words from the ph, magic e, and our red words (basic sight words) We started studying contractions this week and will continue next week.
Writing:
Students will hand in their first narrative writing this week. They will begin to share these with the class. They love to hear everyone's life experiences as much as they love to share them. We will continue to work on introductions, conclusions, including details to help with understanding and interest level. I conferenced with each of the students about their new story they have been writing about in their writing journal.
Reading:
We have been rolling up our sleeves and flexing our muscles to learn how to tackle tricky words. We will continue to learn reading strategies this week as they read their own books and books with partners. We have been reading the story The Cricket in Times Square together. As we ready we discuss good writing skills, reading comprehension, tricky words, predicting, setting, etc. I have been checking the agendas to make sure students have been reading at least 10 minutes/night. Please make sure that your child is doing this. Research shows that the only way to become a good reader to read, read, and then read some more :)
If you have Ms. Lamaster for math:
This week the students had a quiz over sequencing numbers and skip counting. Next week they will have a quiz over ordering numbers and greater than/less than numbers. Please remember we have homework on Tuesday and Thursday's. Even if your child has complete I always tell them to bring this home so you know what they are learning and can review this with them before they return this the next day.
Thanks for all the support at home,,
