Dear Parents,
It was great to see everyone last night at Curriculum night. If you were unable to attend, I am putting a copy the 3rd grade handbook and our PP presentation on my website/blog. Click on the green buttons to view the 3rd Grade Handbook & Curriculum Night Presentation. Some of the parents had questions that we thought several of you might have also. Below are the questions and answers:
Q: How can kids enroll for Math & Science Olympiad?
A: Information will come home when it is time to sign-up for these programs. If you visit the NPES website and look at the drop-down menu under the ‘Activities’ tab, you can read more about the programs.
Q: Can a student attend just one out of the two extended learning days?
A: If a student was recommended for only math or reading, the s/he will only attend one day. If the student was recommended for both subjects, than s/he will only need to attend the one day that the subject is covered. (This only applies to students who received a letter about being enrolled in this after school program.)
Q: Do we need to sign the agenda daily?
A: No. Information about agendas can be found in the Third Grade Handbook on pgs.4-5
Q: Do you need graded quizzes signed by parents and returned?
A: If an assignment needs to be signed and returned, there will be a note on it indicating to do so. This usually only applies to major assessments. However, there may be extenuating circumstances where a quiz or classwork assignment may need to also be signed and returned. If this happens, you will be notified about what to do.
Q: What is ITBS testing?
A: The ITBS stands for Iowa Test for Basic Skills. It is a norm-referenced test that evaluates students on basic skills and is not aligned with any state or national standards and curriculum. Georgia law mandates that a nationally norm-referenced test, such as the ITBS, be administered annually to students in grades three, five, and eight. The purpose of a norm-referenced test is to obtain information about the performance of Georgia's students and compare it with that of students in a national sample. The results are used for evaluation, decision-making, and instructional improvement and is not used for level or grade placement. The scores are reported in percentiles and show how students compared with other students across the nation. For example, if a percentile score was 66, that school achieved a score that was as high as or higher than 66 percent of the other schools in the nation. There is no studying or test preparation that can be done prior to the test since it is not based on any curriculum that we teach.
Enjoy your long weekend,
Laura Lamaster
