Dear Amazing Parents,
What a bunch of superstars we have in 3rd grade. I enjoyed watching a few of these amazing students at our school play, The Big Picture, Saturday. Out students at New Prospect are so talented. They amaze me every day.
We completed our reading and math STAR assessments. I conferenced with all the students about their reading and math scores. We talked about their score and they graphed their progress on their bar graph in their reading data binder. Everyone did a great job! I am so proud of how much they have all improved. A big part of this success is reading at least 20 minutes every night. Reading fluency and comprehension is the only subject which will impact every single content area. It is important for students to not only understand what they ready, but to read at a rate that helps them get through all the text they will be facing in upcoming grades. Thank you for the support ant hard work at home to help make their child successful in school.
In reading I returned their reading assessment and met with them to discuss any problem areas. Some of the students are still struggling with using sentence starters when answering a question. It is a simple technique that helps set up their answer and reinforce what the question is asking. We reviewed adjectives and parts of speech. Some of the students are still struggling with different parts of speech (noun, adjective, verb, pronoun, adverb) and identifying them in sentences. I have several IXL lessons on my website under "Reading Lessons" that they students should have completed to help understand this concept. DON'T FORGET THE MOUSE AND THE MOTORCYCLE HOUSES AND PERSUASIVE LETTER IS DUE ON MONDAY. Students have been presenting their opinion writing essay to the class. I am so happy with the progress the students have made with their writing this year and I enjoy hearing and reading about their thoughts and opinions through their writing.
In social studies we will have an quiz over Susan B. Anthony on Monday/Tuesday(TAG students). We will then begin learning about Mary McCloed Bethune and have a class assignment and short quiz this week.
If you have Ms. Lamaster for math:
We continue to study geometry. We will be reviewing measuring with a ruler and measuring angles this week. A simple skill that they all need practice with is measuring to the 1/4 inch. Many of the students need more hands-on practice with this basic skill. Homework for this week:
Monday: 3.2-IXL V.4 (3rd grade): 4.1- IXL P.3 (4th grade)
Wednesday: 3.2-IXL V.5 (3rd grade); 4.1-IXL P.4 (4th grade)
Thursday/Friday: 3.2-IXL V.8 (3rd grade); 4.1-IXL P.5 (4th grade)
Have a wonderful week and enjoy the sunshine :)
